Kasai is a record bar in Hermosa Beach built around a single hi-fi system and the people listening to it. The music is chosen, not streamed. The lights are low on purpose. There’s food from Chef Hoon Lee and a bar that knows what it’s doing — but the record is the reason you’re here, and everything else is in service of the song.

We built the room around the speakers.
A dedicated hi-fi system. A wall of records pulled by people who care which pressing it is. Resident selectors and rotating guests playing vinyl front to back — not a playlist, not background, not a DJ taking requests. Some nights it’s loose and loud. Some nights it’s a quiet listening session where the room goes still for one side of a record.
Come for the bar. Stay for the deep cut you didn’t know you needed.

Chef Hoon Lee (formerly Redbird, LA) cooks for the room — small, sharp, built to share without ever pulling focus from the record. Everything runs off live fire over Japanese binchōtan charcoal. The bar runs warm and analog: low-lit cocktails, a list with range, wine and sake that know their place in the night.
Everything is made and cooked to order, so plates take the time they take — and they arrive as they come off the fire, ready when they’re ready, not all at once. It’s meant to be eaten the way a record plays: one thing, then the next.
Nobody comes to a listening bar for a tasting menu. They come for one more drink and something worth reaching for while the next side plays.

Hoon came up through fine dining — most recently Redbird in Los Angeles — and built a way of cooking that’s precise without being precious. At Kasai he’s doing something different on purpose: food with the polish of the rooms he came from and none of the formality. Plates that match the tempo of the night and disappear into it.

Tokyo and Mexico City got there first. The coast was overdue.
The listening bar is an old idea — the jazz kissas of Tokyo, the deep-listening rooms of Mexico City, the late nights of LA’s recording studios when the city built the records the rest of the world played. Kasai brings that to the South Bay, a block from the sand, where the dusk does half the lighting for us.
It’s the only true hi-fi listening bar on the LA coastline. We’d tell you to come hear it, but that’s the only way to understand it anyway.
